This year’s 41st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMF) has earned a whooping P622 million in the sixth day of screening the 8 entries in metropolis’ cinemas, higher than last year’s P598 million.
Emerson Carlos, concurrent MMFF chairman, said that the four entries that raked the highest grossing films, in no particular order, are My Bebe Love, Beauty and the Bestie, #Walang Forever, and horror flick Haunted Mansion.
The other four participating movies are: Nilalang, the controverial Honor Thy Father, All You Need Is Pag-Ibig, and Buy Now, Die Later.
The annual film festival opened on December 25 and will run until January 7, 2016.
Controversies marked the annual event brought by MMFF’s decision to disqualify Honor Thy Father from the Best Picture category during the awards night because of non-disclosure of its participation to other film festival.
However, Carlos maintained that all the awardees were deserving and that the decisions made by the jury is proof of Filipino ingenuity, creativity, and passion for the art of filmmaking.
“We stand firm on the decisions made for the MMFF in the awards night. Honor Thy Father was disqualified for the reason that it was already shown in other film festivals, which is in violation of MMFF rules. This is not a decision of one single person alone, but of a collegial body, the MMFF Execom,“ Carlos said.
According to Carlos, the decision is aimed to protect the integrity of the annual film festival and to avoid showing ‘reissued’ films.
To be recalled, the film was not originally part of the 41st MMFF lineup but the festival executive committee later offered the movie a slot in October after an official entry pulled out.
Carlos said he also welcomes the plan of the film producers to sue the organizers of the MMFF.
“We welcome the investigation. It is also chance for us to also explain. It was a very hard decision to make,” said Carlos, adding that it’s one film we can be proud of but they have to abide by the rules.
Asked whether he had seen the movie, Carlos answered affirmative.
“It’s a good film,” he said.
