FUN TIMES AT THE TAIJI “DEFEAT SEA SHEPHERD” FESTIVAL
Commentary by Captain Paul Watson
I received the agenda for the Right Wing Japanese Nationalist Campaign to “Defeat Sea Shepherd” that apparently took place this last week-end.
It really is quite hilarious. 50 nationalists showed up to vent their anger at 3 female Cove Guardians. Except for a few of the Nationalists chasing the women’s car for a few hundred metres, it was pretty boringly uneventful.
Kind of sad really. They had such high expectations.
But they were able take out their frustrations in a very Japanese way by posting a manga cartoons. I loved this one. (Is this manga? I could be wrong, I’m not a cartoon art expert?)
I think what they are trying to say with this drawing is that the Cove Guardians are there so I personally can make lots of money (wow, I wish) so that my wife can ride dolphins. That’s what it looks like, but who knows what they really think. Apparently they indulge in the eating of lots of whales and dolphins and that kind of mercury consumption does strange things to addle and confuse the brain.
I am flattered that they seem to think I am engineering the campaign. Dave Hance, a former LAPD officer is directing the campaign and the Cove Guardians are volunteers. I have absolutely nothing to do with the organizing or deployment of the volunteers.
I guess they can’t bring themselves to understand that the women they were trying to intimidate are not there because I or anyone else told them to be there. They are there because they passionately care about the suffering and the slaughter of dolphins.
The drawing of my wife is amazingly accurate aside from the fact that she is much too shy to ever go topless and has never sat on a dolphin and she has no intention of ever doing so.
The reason that they think we are doing this for money is because they cannot imagine us doing this for any other reason because money is the only thing they understand. All these “poor” fishermen in Taiji are millionaires and drive extremely expensive cars from the profits they make from capturing and enslaving dolphins for the amusement of the ignorant public.
They are simply incapable of comprehending that people would act out of compassion, without being paid, travelling to Taiji at their own expense and spending long hours every day documenting the horrific atrocities for the dolphin killing thugs from Taiji.
The drawing gives me a sinister grin which I suppose is meant to convey that I am an evil person for supporting the efforts of the Cove Guardians to stop the slaughter.
In their minds, compassion for dolphins equates to racism because it criticizes what they call their “food culture.”
All we are saying is that dolphins are not food and it’s pretty dam racist of them to equate our compassion with racism, especially from a group (the nationalists) who rank amongst the most racist groups in Japan.
Anyhow here is the agenda they drew up for the “Defeat Sea Shepherd!” Festival in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture this last week-end. (With my added comments.)
PW: Wow, our very own Festival. Talk about acknowledgement of our campaigns. I hope the Cove Guardians were able to score some Tee-shirts.
Silly Nationalists: As Japanese nationals, we give our punishment to Sea Shepherd who keep harassing people in the town of whaling, Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture starting September 1 every year. Please join us to raise voices of protest to these Westerners who attempt to take the bread out of local fishermen’s mouths and destroy the culture of Japan with their egoistic quibbles.
PW: I think the Cove Guardians may indeed be attempting to take the Ferrari’s from the fishermen but they are not lacking for bread or other necessities. These are not poor people. And all Cove Guardians are not Westerners. We have many Asian and Japanese supporters. There are many Japanese who are ashamed of this massacre. Stopping the slaughter is hardly going to destroy Japanese culture. The Nationalists are doing a pretty good job of destroying Japanese culture themselves. Japan has destroyed the indigenous culture of the island with their horrific abuse of the Ainu people and the Nationalists seem to equate Japanese culture with imperialism, racism, the Yakusa and the butchering dolphins.

PW: The Cove Guardians missed the Security activities unless that was what chasing a Cove Guardian car down the street was all about.

PW: Break from security activities to worship the whales and dolphins. Very bizarre. Apparently they love whales and dolphins so much that they have to kill them. I think that was Ted Bundy’s view of women.

PW: They did not seem to have a problem with finding people a place to stay. Ten of them stayed at the same hotel where the three Cove Guardian women were staying but apparently avoided eye contact.

Have to have the Naval flag to remind them of the glory days of Tojo’s imperialistic Japan before the Emperor betrayed the nationalists by ending the war and preventing the shattering of the millions of Japanese gems, meaning the nationalist at the time wanting the nation to commit mass suicide rather that admit defeat. There was lots of drinking of whiskey, beer and sake each evening with plenty of story telling of what they would like to do to the Cove Guardians and how intimidating they were and how wonderful it is to be part of a culture that kills dolphins, dumps radiation into the ocean, murders the whales and broadcasts the dumbest game shows on the planet.
Will they be back next year because one thing for sure, the Cove Guardians will be back.
This year it was 50 male Nationalists against 3 women Cove Guardians. The objective was intimidation. They failed.
