Casting too many spells? – rpg.stackexchange.com #JHedzWorlD

Never had an issue with spellcaster scaling until today. A player in the group claims he can cast Eldrich blast twice on his turn. Once as an action, and a second time as a bonus action since it is a cantrip. Allowing him to shoot 4 beams for a d10 each (hes 5th level so 2 beams per cast). This seems vastly stronger than anyone else’s max 2 attacks. After the session which ended early with many players angry this player ruined all encounters, there was much talk of re-rolling into all caster party. One wanting to do the same with a wizards firebolt spell as a bonus every turn, others still browsing.

So, is it possible for a caster to cast multiple spells in 1 turn? From what I was quoted from the phb, its possible to cast any spell as an action, then cast a second spell; as long as the bonus action spell was a cantrip 1 a cast time of 1 action? So 99% of all cantrips? Please tell me this is wrong, because I feel that if anyone else does this our melee characters will never see a fight again before the casters nuke them down.

You were quoted to completely incorrectly.

First, Eldritch Blast has a casting time of 1 action (PHB p.237). You’ve only got one action on your turn, so you can only cast Eldritch Blast once. (“Off the shelf,” that is. There are features, like the Sorceror’s Quickened Spell, that might change this.)

It is possible for a caster to cast multiple spells in one turn, and the conditions are described exactly on PHB p.202:

  • one spell has casting time of 1 bonus action,

  • you’ve not used a bonus action for anything else this turn (because you can only take one bonus action per turn),

  • the other spell is a cantrip,

  • the other spell has a casting time of 1 action.

But that’s understandable.

D&D is a great game in many ways. It has never, in my experience, been presented in its published materials in a way that makes sense to someone who doesn’t already know the game. One player misunderstood something, and no other players nor the GM knew the rule well enough to course-correct mid-session.

That’s fine. You now know. Alert your group as soon as possible and be ready for a group conversation about whether this should now be a table-rule, or will this just have been one shining moment in ‘Lock’s career. “Hey, guys, remember that one day when I was in beast-mode? My patron must have been having me on!”

It appears the player has garbled the rules on Bonus Action casting time spells (PHB p.203):

Bonus Action A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

The spell cast using the Bonus Action must have a casting time of 1 Bonus Action. There are very few of these and Eldrich Blast is not one of them.

No. You can only cast a spell as a bonus action if the casting time in the spell description says “1 bonus action.” Eldritch blast does not. If you cast a bonus action spell, the only other spell you can cast that turn is a cantrip. So, if he casts Hex, he can still cast Eldritch Blast that same turn, but not another leveled spell. This is the rule to which your player was referring (and misinterpreted).

There are features of other classes that can affect casting times, but not in the warlock class.

I believe you are misreading what the rules say about casting spells with a bonus action. From the SRD:

A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

It do not say that you can cast a cantrip with a bonus action on your turn. It says that if you cast a spell that has a cast time of a bonus action (eg, Healing Word), you can only cast another spell with your action if it is a cantrip.

Let’s start with the Phb definition of a bonus action.

Various class features, spells, and other abilities let you take an additional action on your turn called a bonus action. Phb, pg 189

So you can only use a bonus action when something says that is a bonus action.

Let’s have a look at the bonus action description under casting time:

A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

So only spells with a casting time of “bonus actions” can be used as a bonus action (healing word, sanctuary and spiritual weapon are examples of this). But if you cast one of this spells, you can only cast a cantrip with your standar action.

So you can’t cast a spell with a casting time of “1 action” as a bonus action, unless special circumstances reduces the casting time to a “bonus action”, like the sorcerer quickened spell feature.

level 5, what class, by the way? – nitsua60 1 hour ago

@nitsua60 Eldritch Blast -> Warlock – Dale M 1 hour ago

@DaleM unless multi… Sorc>2+Wk any would have made this possible in a limited manner. Or Magic Initiate, or…. My only point being there are limited ways to cast Eldritch Blast twice, some number of times. – nitsua60 1 hour ago

@DaleM Eldritch Blast does not explicitly imply warlock: Magic Initiate. – Drunk Cynic 1 hour ago

other spell must be cantrip and must have casting time=1 action. – nitsua60 1 hour ago

‘Sana gumaling agad’ :: PBA-Online! #JHedzWorlD

June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel. PBA Media BureauRight after San Miguel averted an Alaska sweep of the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven finals series following a come-from-behind win Game 4, SMB head coach Leo Austria spoke about the possibility of having June Mar Fajardo return to action.

The reigning back-to-back PBA MVP, who made history on Sunday by becoming the only player in league history to win the Best Player of the Conference award of the Philippine Cup for three straight seasons, has yet to see action in any of the four games played in the series but his coach has already marked his calendar – assuming the team can make it that far.

“Probably, if the series goes to a Game 7 and that would be February 3. We want to give him enough time to recover from his injury,” Austria told sportswriters.

“He’s the future of San Miguel, Gilas and the PBA. He wants to play, but we don’t want to aggravate his injury.”

Veteran guard Alex Cabagnot also wished for Fajardo’s speedy recovery but doesn’t want his teammate to force a return, hoping instead that he takes the time he needs to recover fully from the injury.

“First and foremost, I just want the best for June Mar. He has a long career ahead of him. Alam naman natin yung mga knee injuries, it’s not like a sprained ankle. Whenever he comes back, then he comes back, but we have to do our part,” Cabagnot said.

Fajardo himself is raring to get back onto the floor.

GENEVA, Switzerland — Top French-Swiss chef Benoit Violier, 44, of Switzerland’s three-star Michelin restaurant, Restaurant de l’Hotel de Ville, was found dead at his home on Sunday in an apparent suicide, police said.

“Late in the afternoon, police… went to Crissier where they discovered at his home the body of Mr Benoit Violier,” Swiss police said in a statement, adding that it appeared he had shot himself.

Crissier, near the southwestern Swiss city of Lausanne, is the location of Violier’s restaurant.

The eatery was last year crowned the “world’s best restaurant” by France’s “La Liste” ranking which named 1,000 top establishments in 48 countries.

The gastronomic guide is the French foreign ministry’s answer to the UK-based World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Swiss police said an investigation had been opened into the death

“Out of respect for the family”, Swiss authorities would make no further comment, police added.

Why 3 backslashes equal 4 in Python string? – stackoverflow.com #JHedzWorlD

Could you tell me why '?\?'=='?\?' gives True? That drives me crazy and I can’t find a reasonable answer…

>>> list('?\?') ['?', '\', '\', '?'] >>> list('?\\?) ['?', '\', '\', '?']

Basically, because python is slightly lenient in backslash processing. Quoting from https://docs.python.org/2.0/ref/strings.html :

Unlike Standard C, all unrecognized escape sequences are left in the string unchanged, i.e., the backslash is left in the string.

(Emphasis in the original)

Therefore, in python, it isn’t that three backslashes are equal to four, it’s that when you follow backslash with a character like ?, the two together come through as two characters, because ? is not a recognized escape sequence.

Because x in a character string, when x is not one of the special backslashable characters like n, r, t, 0, etc, evaluates to a string with a backslash and then an x.

>>> '?' '\?'

From the python lexical analysis page under string literals at: https://docs.python.org/2/reference/lexical_analysis.html

There is a table that lists all the recognized escape sequences.

\ is an escape sequence that is ===

? is not an escape sequence and is === ?

so ‘\\’ is ‘\’ followed by ‘\’ which is ‘\’ (two escaped )

and ‘\’ is ‘\’ followed by ” which is also ‘\’ (one escaped and one raw )

also, is should be noted that python does not distinguish between single and double quotes surrounding string literal, unlike some other languages.

So ‘String’ and “String” are the exact same thing in python

This is because backslash acts as an escape character for the character(s) immediately following it, if the combination represents a valid escape sequence. The dozen or so escape sequences are listed here. They include the obvious ones such as newline n, horizontal tab t, carriage return r and more obscure ones such as named unicode characters using N..., e.g. NWAVY DASH which represents unicode character u3030. The key point though is that if the escape sequence is not known, the character sequence is left in the string as is.

Part of the problem might also be that the Python interpreter output is misleading you. This is because the backslashes are escaped when displayed. However, if you print those strings, you will see the extra backslashes disappear.

>>> '?\?' '?\\?' >>> print('?\?') ?\? >>> '?\?' == '?\?' # I don't know why you think this is True??? False >>> '?\?' == r'?\?' # but if you use a raw string for '?\?' True >>> '?\\?' == '?\?' # this is the same string... see below True

For your specific examples, in the first case '?\?', the first escapes the second backslash leaving a single backslash, but the third backslash remains as a backslash because ? is not a valid escape sequence. Hence the resulting string is ?\?.

For the second case '?\\?', the first backslash escapes the second, and the third backslash escapes the fourth which results in the string ?\?.

So that’s why three backslashes is the same as four:

>>> '?\?' == '?\\?' True

If you want to create a string with 3 backslashes you can escape each backslash:

>>> '?\\\?' '?\\\?' >>> print('?\\\?') ?\?

or you might find “raw” strings more understandable:

>>> r'?\?' '?\\\?' >>> print(r'?\?') ?\?

This turns of escape sequence processing for the string literal. See String Literals for more details.
