Games Wednesday
(Smart Araneta Coliseum)
4:15 p.m. – Globalport vs NLEX
7 p.m. – Mahindra vs San Miguel
Globalport’s dynamic backcourt duo of Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle are back with their deadly form.
Romeo scored 26 points and Pringle had 17 points as the Batang Pier snapped a two-game losing skid with a 120-105 win over the Blackwater Elite in the Smart Bro PBA Philippine Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 5-foot-11 Romeo still struggled with his shooting as he went 9-of-21 from the field, but his ability to attack the basket led him to shoot 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He also added six rebounds.
Pringle, the 6-foot-1 guard who was the top overall pick during the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft, delivered a solid all-around performance as he converted 6-of-10 shots from the perimeter – including 2-of-3 three-pointers – while adding six rebounds and six assists.
In their previous game against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Romeo and Pringle scored just 13 and 10 points, respectively, on a combined 7-of-26 shooting in a 70-85 setback last Wednesday.
Globalport also got big contributions from its frontline as Doug Kramer and Rico Maierhofer came through with double-double effort as the former colleted 16 points and 15 rebounds while the latter added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The win gave Globalport a 4-3 record, and more importantly, it fanned the team’s bid to clinch a quarterfinal playoff berth.
“It’s a total team effort,” said Globalport coach Pido Jarencio, whose team has remaining four games in the eliminations. “Alaska ang Ginebra beat us in Araneta, standings namin 50-50, kaya kelangan manalo kami.”
Although the Batang Pier have a mathematical chance of still earning an outright semifinal spot, Jarencio said they are aiming instead of finishing the eliminations between third to sixth places, which has a twice-to-beat advantage against the seventh to 10th finishers in the crossover quarterfinals.
“Ok na muna kami dun. Basta one game at a time,” said Jarencio, whose team will face NLEX on Wednesday, Meralco n Dec, 9, Mahindra in Dec. 12 and Talk ’N Text on Dec. 18.
Asked if he was inspired by his alma maters’ UST win in Game 2 over the Far Eastern University in the UAAP Finals, Jarencio refused to answer but he said he was at the Tigers’ dugout at halftime last Saturday.
The 120 points of Globalport was the second most by any team this conference behind Alaska’s 123-104 win against Globalport last Nov. 20, and the second most in franchise history.
