Google stop pagerank? Google: We Won't Be Updating Toolbar PageRank #JHedzWorlD

Kind of expected since they haven't updated it in ages.

About time, been expecting it for months, fingers got a little sore from repeating it :D

I already read the article in seoroundtable website and I noticed that there are still people panicking :D
I'm not surprised because most of them are hungry for this update and expecting to increase their site's page rankings :)
If I were them I'll be focusing on my audience on how to provide them interesting and engaging content from my site. It will be more important to me ;)

How will this affect SEO? Will sites with PR lose rankings?

Nothing will change really as Google will still employ the same factors in forming their rankings, its just that users won't see the Toolbar PR which was updated once-twice per year for the last few. As implied many times before this metric has "evolved" to be rather useless but that doesn't mean that the search engine is not constantly updating PR internally. So keep following guidelines, build links organically, produce great and useful content and don't worry about a number that you won't be able to see in the future. ;)

lol – PR was an "output" of their ranking process not an "input"

Now a days, PR doesn't matter. There are many blogs ranking well in search engines although their PR is 1 or 2. Google now concentrates on content only.

It is probably a good thing… People will stop strategizing around it for pure SEO reasons only.

PageRank isn't a large factor of ranking websites.

OK let's do this. You build a site, and I'll build a site. You only build links on PR N/A pages/domains and I'll build links on high PR pages/domains. Let's see who ranks better. Sound good?

That's because PR isn't a factor used in the ranking of websites. It' an "explanation" or "result" of the ranking.

A bit like having a bad cold. You know you're sick because you have to blow your nose but you aren't sick BECAUSE you blow your nose. You're sick because of a virus in your body.

Equally, if you have a good site you know Google thinks it's good because it ranks well in the SERPs etc. It's not good because it ranks though, it's good because of your hard work.

PR going just means we lose one of the indicators of quality. It's been flawed for years though so it's no great loss.

Google are NOT stopping PR and its still going to be a component of the ranking algorithm. They update PR every day and factor that into the search results every day.

All that has happen is that ONE staff member has said that they PROBABLY will not be exporting that PR value to the tool bar anymore. It was NOT an official announcement.

I think this is a pretty solid reply.

They may not be updating the PR Toolbar but there is nothing to say that the whole principle of what PR is how it's calculated and how they take into account PR in their algorithms is being dropped. To me this is little/no news at all and doesn't make any difference in terms of SEO and how things currently work.

Agent000 and Get Searched are absolutely right!

Actually I think that Google is doing us a favour by stopping to update the PR Toolbar. For far too long people have been obsessed with PR. While the smart SEO crowd has already moved on, and started to use better metrics. Such as those of Majestic and Ahrefs. There are so many ways to tell if a page has authority, and PR is one of the most unreliable ones.

Still I do look at PR figures from time to time, for a quick check if a website has possibly had authority in the past. And I say possibly, because PR has been just too easy to fake.

Great update, I am glad its not a strong ranking factor like it once was. Also was a pain at how some webmasters cared so much about PR, it was stupid.

Who said it was still not a strong ranking factor? They still use it internally.

most are abusing pagerank anyway..

Abuse in what way?

Exploiting it through SEO..? Like what you've said: "For far too long people have been obsessed with PR" and "PR has been just too easy to fake." It's becoming useless so better take it off the equation..
